How to Find Companies That Are Hiring

How to Find Companies That Are HiringHow to Find Companies That Are HiringWhen youre job searching time is always an issue, especially if youre unemployed or in a bad job that you really need to move on from. In addition, you dont want to waste your time weeding through old job listings that are out-of-date and already filled. Regardless of the timing, the applicants who apply sooner rather than later have a better shot at getting an interview than those who apply after the interview process has already begun. Whats the best way find companies that have open positions? It depends on what type of job youre looking for, but there are ways to get the newest job openings verbunden and via schmelzglas, as well as options for finding local companies who are hiring now. Get Ready to Apply For Jobs Before you start searching for jobs, get ready to job search. Create or update your resume, have a basic cover letter that you can customize for the jobs you are applying for ready and have al l the information you need to complete a job application at hand. You dont want to miss out on a good opportunity because youre not ready to submit an application. Also, dont wait to apply. Too many people spent so much time deciding whether they should apply and writing and re-writing job application materials that, by the time they got their application in it was too late and the job was filled. Use Job Search Engines The job search engines not only let you find job postings fastbecause they are searching many sources of job listings at once, but they are also a good way to find jobs that are available immediately.LinkUp.com, for example, searches for jobs directly on company websites. Once the job is no longer listed, its removed from the site and wont show up in the search results.US.jobs also posts jobs from company job boards, as well as from state job banks for all fifty states.Jobsminer.com is a social network site job search engine that provides a way to find those jobs that are listed on LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, blogs, and forums. Many companies promote current job openings on social networking sites, sometimes even before they are listed on job boards or company websites, so youll be able to find listings ahead of other candidates. Set Up Job Search Alerts Most job boards and many company websites and job search engines have options where you can get new job postings that match your interests sent to you as soon as they are listed. For example, Indeed.com offers email job alerts and RSS feeds that deliver and jobs to news readers. CareerBuilder.com users can set up job alerts to receive notifications about new job listings that include the keywords (company name or job title) that you list. Apply Direct at Company Websites If you know which companies you are interested in working for, you can go directly to the source and search for and apply for jobs online directly on many company websites. At most company sites, you can apply for all level positions online and your application will go directly into the companys application tracking system for consideration. Youll find job postings in the Careers section of the site, which is often listed under About Us or About the Company on the front page of the company website. In addition, many large companies are always hiring. Leading employers are continually accepting applications and filling job openingsbecause they have so many employees, there is always turnover and new jobs. Many of those companies are part of the DirectEmployers Association, a nonprofit HR consortium of leading global employers, which lists jobs and information listed by company on Us.jobs. Heres mora on finding companies you would like to work for and finding jobs on company websites. Ask if a Company Is Hiring If your timing is right and you catch an employer at the right hiring moment, you can get yourself considered for a job or internship. Employers often appreciate when interested job candidates reach out to ask about employment. Not only does it show that you have a specific interest in the company, but it also saves the employer the time and expense of advertising and recruiting. Contacting an employer before he or shehas begun advertising a position will also help you beat out the competition. Below are a few suggestions for ways to reach out to employers. Send an email or letter.Consider sending an inquiry letter, also known as acold contact cover letter, prospecting letter, orvalue proposition letter. This letter (sent via mail or email) should contain information on why the company interests you and why your skills and experience would be an asset to the organization. Dont forget to include your contact information. Here aresample inquiry lettersto review.Use social and professional networking.Email isnt the only way to ask if someone is hiring. For example, consider reaching out to an employer via aLinkedIn message. This message should contain much of the same information as an inquiry letter, although it can be a bit shorter. Call or visit the office. If you live near the office, consider a quick in-person visit. At the very least, you can leave a copy of your resume and contact information, and if youre lucky, a hiring manager might have a minute to chat with you. If you cannot visit the office, you can also call. You may not be able to get through to a decision maker, but it cant hurt to try. You can also consider calling before stopping in, to see when a hiring manager or other executive might be available for a brief conversation. Network.Take any opportunity you can to meet and reach out to an employee at the company you are interested in. You canconnect with employees and employersthrough social or professional networks, or at local job fairs or industry-related events. Making a personal connection, if possible, can only help your job search. Think Local When you know that you want to work in your hometown or another speci fic location, take advantage of local job search resources. Many smaller companies list positions on Craigslist or the town Chamber of Commerce website if it has a job board. Check the online help wanted ads in your local newspaper as well. If youre interested in a retail job, walk around town or the mall. You will see Now Hiring or Help Wanted signs in store windows, along with instructions on how to apply. Ask Your Network Networking, both in-person and online, is still the way the majority of job openings are filled. Let your friends and family know that youre seeking employment. Also (carefully because you dont want your current employer to find out youre job searching) ask your connections on LinkedIn, and other contacts that you know you can safely tell you are looking for work if they can let you know about any job listings that might be a good fit. You may be able to apply before the job is even posted. Heres more onjob searching when you have a jobfor job seekers who ar e job hunting while employed. If youre out of work, of course, tell everyone you know you are seeking employment. You dont know who may be able to help unless you ask.

Managing a Public Relations Campaign

Managing a Public Relations CampaignManaging a Public Relations CampaignIt can often seem overwhelming, or even impossible. A public relations (PR) campaign can be a daunting project to undertake. And if youre a small business or even an individual, you may not know where to start or how to get the project off the ground. With so many different moving pieces, a plethora of timelines and partnerships to consider, and the media to flossele, it can be a tough task even for a trained professional. However, like any big task, it is much easier to undertake if you divide the campaign into manageable segments. Follow this advice, and you will find your next PR campaign so much easier to manage. Write aPress Release Any effective PR campaign is going to require several press releases. It is up to you to dig up the information that will be relevant to the media and do it whenever you have significant news to share. You will create too much noise if you overwhelm the media with too many upda tes, so plan them carefully, and make each one newsworthy. When you have news about your company and products, write a press release and distribute it to the appropriate media outlets. Be sure you know how to write a press release because there is a big difference between advertising and public relations. Create a PowerfulPress Kit The next step is the press kit, sometimes called the media kit. If you are running a PR campaign, this can bean invaluable tool that you can use to promote your company. From trade shows to product launches, there are a number of good reasons you must create a press kit. Remember, though, that press kits should be inventive and eye-catching. A simple package or envelope is not going to cut the mustard, especially with so much clutter around. Do something big and bold. See what your competitors are doing, and do something different. Its up to you to get the information out there in a way that is intriguing, and demands to be talked about. Make Announc ements OnYour Blog You should have a blog, be it corporate, employee, or personal. Now is the time to take advantage of it.By making your blog a regular part of your public relations campaign, you are consistently exposing your customers, and journalists, to the very latest news about your company. Do it in an informal, but professional, way and it will not seem like a lot of sales talk. Work In Partnership With the Media Some people believe that the media is there as a tool to be used for announcements.Make no mistake, the media is not obliged to give you any kind of coverage. If its a slow news day, you may get lucky. Otherwise, you need to do something newsworthy. Remember, PR gives you the ability to get free publicity. Knowing how to work with the media will help you come off like a pro even if its your first media event. So, reach out. Be accommodating and friendly, not pushy or demanding. Develop a long-lasting relationship with the media so you can start to develop contact s in the industry as well. By doing things this way, you will create partnerships that can help you get coverage long into the future. Organize Media Events PR is more than simply blitzing the media with your press releases. In fact, this can have the opposite effect. But organizing media events can be an outstanding way to get multiple media outlets to come to you, and give you free exposure. You must be creative when coming up with ideas. Just because you have a news conference doesnt mean the media will show up. A groundbreaking ceremony with a local celebrity, or other prominent figures to address the crowd increases, your chances of getting publicity over the same event with just you and some employees sticking shovels in the ground. How can you make something thats news to you become news to everybody? Ask yourself would I care about this story? If not, how can you make it more interesting or, more importantly, more relevant? If youre working with a childrens charity to raise money, the media will be more likely to show up if youre hosting a fun event like snow skiing in summer for the children who the charity helps rather than you just filling out a check to hand over to the director of the charity. Learn Crisis Management Murphys Law states that what can go wrong, will go wrong. If youre not prepared to deal with the downs, your ups will get buried. Its possible youll have to deal with product recalls, lawsuits or even deaths of employees while on the job. The numerous possibilities of what can go wrong are something you have to be prepared for before they happen. You cant anticipate everything that can occur, but you can learn effective crisis management to prepare you for the future. But, if you are ready to pounce, you can quickly extinguish these fires, or even turn a negative into a positive. Be smart, think ahead, and get ready to turn your PR campaign into a success story.

Positive Professional References Are a Powerful Tool

Positive Professional References Are a Powerful ToolPositive Professional References Are a Powerful ToolPositive Professional References Are a Powerful ToolPut the best professional reference in your back pocket.Your online search has led you to the perfect job opportunity. The company is a fit as far as culture and the pay is on point with what youre seeking. Up until now youve been cruising along through your application, but then you hit a wall. The next step asks for you to enter professional references that can vouch for your performance. Your resume is in tip-top shape, and your cover letter is pristine, but youve forgotten one thing. You never compiled a list of references, and youre bedrngnis sure which names you should list. You think back to your previous jobs and search your brain for past employers you feel would rave about your performance. A few come to mind, but can you be guaranteed theyll provide a positive reference?Submitting professional references isnt as simple as just listing a few names and schmelzglas addresses. Youve got to work hard to secure positive references. Here are a few tips to help you be prepared for the next time you run into a request for work references from a potential employer.Never burn bridgesIf youve already done this, its too late. Its hard to repair a relationship with an employer when you leave on a sour note. Its not too late, however, for you to keep this tip in mind going forward and not make the mistake again.A previous employer isnt going to vouch for your performance if you bash them or become argumentative on the way out the door. So, no matter how bad the experience, smile and play nice. You never know when youll need a positive reference from that person.Additionally, its important that you dont bash previous employers when you talk to other people. You never know whos connected to whom, and word can travel fast, especially in this digital age.Lets say, for example, you leave a job and post on social media how happy you are to be out of that place. You talk about how terrible the experience is and ramble on about your boss being a jerk. While it might have helped you blow off some steam, one of your Facebook connections might know that person, or worse yet, you might have connected with them and forgotten.Word gets back, one way or another, and you find that when you reach to your former employees to include them on a professional reference list, your phone calls are ignored. Or worse. That person agrees to provide you with a reference, but they dont tell you its going to be negative and you lose out on the job opportunity. Dont lose out. Just remember to smile and move on. You never know when youll need someone to vouch for you.Always do your bestSometimes when you know youre headed out the door and moving onto the next job, its easy to abflug slacking. You may not realize it, but people notice. If you start showing up to work late, turning in low quality work or otherwise not puttin g in the effort, your boss (and your teammates) will notice. No matter how stellar your performance had been prior to the onset of your slacking, your recent efforts can erase all previous successes. First and last impressions are very powerful, so be mindful of the last impression you make.Be sure to perform at the highest rate possible, and even ask for mora work when possible. Look to help out your teammates even more during a time like this. A little help from a friend can go a long way in leaving a positive last impression.Make the initial askPrior to your last day, sit down with your boss and let them know how much you appreciate everything during your time working with them. Its ok to ask for a reference in the future at this point. If your boss is any good at their job, theyll be sad to see you go, but theyll be happy to see you progress in your career. It should be anyone in a management positions goal to improve the lives of those they supervise, and thus they should be happ y to provide you with a reference (provided you did a good job).Follow upOften times, you may not need to reach out to your work references for a number of years. So that you dont become forgotten, and their reference can remain fresh, be sure to connect now and then to keep a positive rapport. No need to mention the reference in your follow-up, unless you need it at that point. Just follow up to say youre checking in to see how that person is doing. Showing that youre thinking about them and concerned about their well-being puts you back on their mind and shows that youre not just using them for a work reference.Provide contextWhen the time comes that you do need someones reference, be sure to provide context. Offer details about the position youre interested in, and let them know exactly what points youre hoping theyll provide a reference for.A general reference is great, but when a previous employer can vouch for capabilities that relate directly to the job to which youre applying , that can really have impact. Remind the potential reference of some of the things you accomplished while working with them and then explain how they relate to the new role.By adding context, your work reference can be a lot more effective. Rather than simply telling the potential employer that you did a good job as a whole, your reference can vouch for specific tasks you achieved that relate directly. That connection could end up being the difference that puts you over the top.Be thankfulAfter a previous employer provides a reference for you, youll want to be sure to send them a thank you note, whether via email or a physical letter. Either one is perfectly fine. While you may be pumped about starting your new job (the job that reference helped you land), its highly possible that youll be looking to make a similar leap at some point in your career while at your new job. The reference that helped put you over the top may not be as willing to vouch for you the next time around if you didnt show gratitude the first time.It doesnt have to be anything elaborate. No flowers or food offerings necessary. Just say, thank you. Youll be surprised at how far those two words can take you.Start todayNow that youre armed with this knowledge of how to start a professional reference list, its time to get started. Dont wait until you land on that references page on your next application. If you wait, the length of time it takes you to secure those references might be time enough for the job opening to close. Dont miss out because you neglected to be proactive. Start brainstorming and contacting people today and have that list built and ready to roll before you jump into that next application.Ready to write the next chapter of your career? 7 Emotionally Deadly Sins at Work and Home (Part I)

7 Emotionally Deadly Sins at Work and Home (Part I) Its fair to say that perhaps the four fruchtwein important things in your life are What happensWhat you think about itHow you feel about itWhat you do about itThe first, as often as not, is beyond our complete control, when not also completely beyond our control. But the second and thirdwhat we think and how we feel about what happens and what (can) do about itare, in general, far more discretionary, i.e., up to us (unless, for example, we are on or need to be on stupefying meds), and have great bearing on the fourth life elementour response actions. We cannot choose our parentsthey just happen, but we can choose our thoughts and feelings about them. In a tight job market, its hard to be choosey but its easier to choose how we think and feel about the job, any job, once we have it, and then, to choose what we do about it.Emotionally Making 1=2Howe ver, choosing the wrong thoughts and feelings about a badeanstalt situation or bad job is very likely to make matters much worse. Where there was one problem, there are now two to be dealt with the bad situation and the bad feelings about it. If the bad feelings, in turn, generate more bad feelings, about them, the stage has been set for a highly toxic and growing pyramid of negative feelings about negative feelingsall on top of the initial bad situation.)Just as we should never permanently consent to anything that permanently impairs our capacity to consent, e.g., consent to be lobotomized into a permanent volitionally vegetative state in which we can no longer give proper consent, we should not allow negative feelings to impair our capacity to turn them off or to prevent their proliferation. The Character and Forms of Bad Emotions a Failed Smoke-Alarm ModelBy bad feelings, I do not mean merely unpleasant feelings. I mean feelings that, in addition to being unpleasant, make things wo rseperpetuate themselvesA toothache is a bad feeling, but responded to promptly and wisely it neither makes things worse nor perpetuates itself. Thats one example of good bad feelings.Bad feelings should function like properly functioning smoke alarms They should tell you that something is wrong and that you must do one of two thingseither listen to the alarm and investigate what is causing it, or do your best to turn the alarm off, if you cannot find any legitimate reason for it.What they should not be allowed to do is to stay on forever to create panic and set off even more fires (in the stampede to escape, by knocking over or dropping a burning candle), or to be set off when the bad feeling is a false alarm (that may set off a cascade of even more false alarms, like a spreading, terrifying and false rumor).Making the saatkorn mistake with good situations and jobs is likely to have the same bad effect, but with a greater tinge of irony Instead of making a bad situation worse, need lessly catastrophizing or otherwise reacting negatively will make a good situation bad or horrible.More Emotional Sins Than EmotionsThere are as many possible emotional mistakes or sins as there are emotionsactually, many more than that, once combinations and permutations of emotions are factored in. Permutationsordered sequences of emotionscan horribly misfire if mis-sequenced.For example, a friendship is likely to terminate if, instead of feeling and expressing the sequence (fear, joy) upon hearing of a friends heart attack and recovery, you strangely reverse it, i.e., feel (joy, fear), in that order. Likewise, if upon getting a promotion, you initially feel worried about your ability to cope, but later feel confident and upbeat, your job is far likelier to last longer and proceed more smoothly than it would if the order of those feelings were reversed.A high emotional IQ (EQ) requires not only consistent selection of the most appropriate emotions, but also wise selection of their sequence. (Of course, mis-sequencing emotions also means mis-selection of the individual emotions, as well as of the sequence.)7 Deadly Emotional Sins (the First 3)Such complex compound emotional bad choices aside, the most common emotional mistakes are simply bad choices of simple emotions. The following are seven such emotional missteps that can ruin everything, or make it all much worse1. Hurt-Disappointment Confusion One of the biggest, yet most common emotional sins or mistakes is to feel hurt when feeling disappointed will sufficewhich is almost always. You are passed over for a promotion, your significant other dumps you and makes you feel like the insignificant other, your best friend is smearing you behind your back, or your kids forget your birthday. The unreflective reflex response is to feel hurtwhich usually means experiencing the incident as a blow to self-esteem, with accompanying self-doubt. It also usually means self-pity. In general, it is not only an over-reactio n, but is also the totally wrong reaction, especially given the fact that disappointment is a much better and easier emotional choice.Heres how it works The next time you feel hurt, e.g., you catch your business or other partner cheating on you, before you wallow in hurt, imagine how you would feel if your round of golf got rained out or your yoga class got canceled. Youd be disappointednothing more. No self-doubt, no disempowering self-pity.Likewise, if you are dumped, betrayed, ignored or passed over, try reframing the incident as a happening that justifies disappointment, and forget the hurt. Shift the focus from impacts on you to perceptions and observations about the people or situations that caused the incident. Youll feel much better, less confused by what went wrong and howand, importantly, much smarter in shifting your gaze from the setbacks emotional effects on you to its objective causes.2. The Illusion of Self-Esteem Hurt is, as mentioned above, generally associated with damage to or loss of self-esteem, as though we independently esteem ourselves in a self-created vacuum and on an emotional island. This is an illusion, and a harmful one, because it prevents insight into the real determinants of our (dis)comfort with ourselves and self-ascribed social, economic, moral, etc., status, while fueling the toxic dynamics of hurt.Self-esteem became such a big deal, in part because of Eric Fromms well-intentioned ideas, in the hugely popular The Art of Loving, about self-lovea central one being that we must love ourselves before we can love others, which makes about as much sense as saying that we have to lift ourselves by our arms before we can lift others that way, or that we cant make others laugh without making ourselves laugh first. Rubbishbut influential rubbish that is but one step away from saying that we cannot esteem others unless we esteem ourselves (as though I am really two people the esteemer and the esteemed, the loving and the lovedmore rub bish.)Damage to and worry about ones self-esteem are both needless concerns about an illusion. The reality is that what passes for a self-created sense of self-esteem is nothing more than an estimation of where one stands in real or imaginary hierarchies that one chooses, aspires or is somehow forced to belong to. A so-called loss of self-esteem is nothing more than a revised self-assigned hierarchy scorein the form of a lower or failing grade, one rung or more down some ladder(s) that you choose or are forced to make important. So instead of agonizing or gloating over losses or gains of some abstract self-esteem, keep things real and reflective Ask yourself what the real impact of some happening is on the real or imagined social, moral, economic, etc., hierarchies to which you (wish to) belong, and, just as importantly, whether belonging to those hierarchies and having status in the eyes of others is so important or wise, after all.Often, you will find that neither the consequences nor the hierarchies are all that important, e.g., when a kid feels a loss of self-esteem because he doesnt have the Nikes his friends have. Falling for conventional perceptions of self-esteem obscures and obstructs this constructive, reflective process and opportunityat any and all ages.3. Anger-Frustration Confusion Anger should be reserved for your enemies. For everyone else, frustration is the appropriate emotion to choose when others annoy, thwart, inconvenience or otherwise make things difficult for usyes, choose, since your brain, if intact, will allow you to reflect on an emotion (at least the emotion you just felt, if not the one thats sweeping over you in the heat of the moment). You should be angry with your boss, a colleague, your spouse, your kids or the guy driving too slowly in front of you only if you truly and rightly believe that (s)he is acting from malice or contemptuous disregard of you or your feelings. If a childs crying is driving you nuts, feel free to respond with frustrationa measure of the gap between what is and what you think ought to be. Youll find its much easier to maintain a relationship, or at least an insightful understanding, with a non-enemy who frustrates you than with someone (by my proposed definition, an enemy) who has angered you.If an employee is just not getting the hang of a task, feel free to feel frustrated, but give the anger a pass, unless you believe the employee is actually willfully trying to frustrate or irritate you and to sabotage his or her own job.Dont get angry with the employee or the child, for once you feel or vent anger, you transform your relationship forever, into a hostile or suspicious one, because you have irreparably categorized the target of your anger as having an evil will, which, if detected even once, will have proven it exists in that person, and therefore as solid grounds for enduring suspicion and dislike.____________________Next in Part II, defanging the other four deadly emotions.

How open offices prohibit productivity and social interaction

How open offices prohibit productivity and social interactionHow open offices prohibit productivity and social interactionLately, theres been some debate about the productive efficiency of open offices. Considering how in vogue they are at the moment, it can be assumed that the pros are winning International Facility Management Association, corroborates, citing 68% of coworkers saying they currently or previously worked in an open office.Briefly, the consensus that favors them over traditional cubical style offices are composed of these principal points theyre cost-effective, they make employees mora flexible and theyre ideal for creatives wishing to network with each other.Has the trend been around long enough to properly examine these claims? Are open offices actually better for employee interaction? The points that attempt to justify the popularity of open architecture are all fine ones, but more and more studies are seeking to debunk the idea that they fortify productive employee c ohabitation.A 2018 study conducted by Harvard Business School reports that open offices actually reduce coworker interaction by 70% and surge email and messaging interaction by 50%. The relaxed structure makes workers feel more comfortable tuning their teammates out, seeing them pop in headphones with greater frequency, socially withdraw and resort to Slack as often as they can.Fast Company recently published a report that repudiates all social benefits of the growing trend. The author, Art Markman believes them to be aesthetically predisposed to inspire harsh judgment. From the time you leave, to what you eat for lunch and every idiosyncratic behavior that occupies the spaces in between, your coworkers get an intimate view. Moreover, noting this disparaging surveillance makes the employees that fall victim to it more likely to engage in fake work. i.e staying an hour longer to belie the impression of diligence.Shal Khazancho, professor of management at RITs Saunders College of busi ness addsWhen youre always sitting in that low-privacy environment, Khazanchi explained, your guard is always up and it depletes cognitive resources because youre always trying to manage impressions. That puts you in a very self-oriented way your focus becomes self as opposed to others and that is important for relationships or close interpersonal ties.According to researchers from theUniversity of Sydney,The benefits of being close to co-workers in open-plan offices were offset by factors such as increased noise and less privacy.A report published by Basex, claims the aggravated cost of work interruptions is roughly $588 billion annually in the U.S. Open architecture implores we withdraw socially, shy away from our coworkers and engage in activities that arent super conducive to the tasks at hand.TheInformation Overload Research Group pegs digital noise distraction to cost US firms about 1 trillion dollars a year.In addition to the decrease in productivity, the general distractions that accompany open offices also induce higher absentee rates. So with a step back, we survey the outlay. Do open offices make way for a more productive America? Or is it a flash in the plan, waste of resources?

Student loan debt has huge mental health aspects

Student loan debt has huge mental health aspectsStudent loan debt has huge mental health aspectsMay is Mental Health Awareness Month. Its the one month out of the year when we try to bring awareness to mental health and all of its causes and effects. Its been well known that financial problems can cause mental health problems. In fact, my friend Melanie Lockert, ofDear Debt, focuses on this very topic in her work. She learned years ago that many of the people were coming to her website because they were Googling about debt and suicide.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreIn honor of the theme for this month,Student Loan Plannerran a survey on mental health and student loan debt. Their readership is more likely to have high student loan balances, which influences the responses to the survey. Here is what they foundNinety percent of borrowers experienced significant anxiety due to the their student loan burden. One in 15 borrowers has considered suicide due to their student loans.More than half of high debt student loan borrowers have experienced depression because of their debt. Why are respondents feeling so awful? Because there is a sense of helplessness when there is so much debt and bedrngnis enough income to match it. The 829 respondents of this survey are not alone. In fact, there are currently 44 million U.S. student loan borrowers who owe a total of 1.5 trillion dollars. This is especially painful now as wages have stagnated while education costs have increased. This is especially true for those who have higher student loan balances. The survey found that one in nine borrowers who owe $80,000 to $150,000 in student loan debt considered suicide because of their debt. Thats almost double than that of overall student loan borrowers. The survey found that this range of borrowers were feeling the most pain because of their debt to income ratio. Their debt is hig h but their income is not necessarily high enough to cover it.These are some pretty sobering and upsetting statistics. I dont want to leave you with the schwimmbad and not propose any solutions or actions you can take. Here are just some of my ideasReally consider what youre getting into if you decide to go back to school for another degree. A lot of people are tempted to go back to school if they are feeling lost or stumped in their career. But is the debt always worth it? Its something to ask yourself before you take the leap. (I spoke toEmilie Aries at Bossed Up about this a while back.)Make sure you qualify and are making the proper payments forstudent loan forgiveness. Not everyone can qualify for this, but if youre working in a field that does, make sure youre taking advantage of it. Talk to your HR department and your student loan provider to get started on the right path.Start lobbying your decision makers for affordable higher education The cost of higher education has gone up by over 200% since the 80s. Thats a LOT in a short amount of time, especially since wages have not increased at the same pace. This is a major problem, and its something that can be controlled. Affordable education is a hot button issue right now, rightly so, and our decision makers should be getting pressured at every turn. Make sure they know that its one of the issues that will sway your vote.Seek helpif youre feeling anxious, depressed, hopeless, or suicidal. Your debt doesnt have to consume you. I know that healthcare, especially mental healthcare, is expensive and hard to access. But there are affordable options out there, especially if your safety is at risk. The moral of this article is that its normal and common to feel bad about your financial situation, especially when a lot of debt is involved. Youre far from the only person who feels this way. But its important to remember that your debt doesnt define you. You have inherent worth outside of these things. Reach out an d get help when you need it. Talk to a friend for family member, find a therapist, hire a coach, orcall a hotline. This article originally appeared on Maggie Germano. You might also enjoyNew neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happyStrangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds10 lessons from kleine Franklins daily schedule that will double your productivityThe worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs10 habits of mentally strong people

What You Need to Know Before a Skype Interview

What You Need to Know Before a Skype InterviewWhat You Need to Know Before a Skype Interview20When you think of a job bewerbungsgesprch, mora than likely there is a little bit of anxiety that surfaces. And when you have a video interview, your stress levels might go even higher. Understanding what you need to know before a Skype interview, or any video interview, is important to set the stage to make your best impression.Although a video interview is similar to an in-person interview, there are a few different things to consider. Asking a few questions to understand the process of the interview can help you prepare. Here are three important questions to ask prior to your Skype interview. How many people will be in attendance for the interview? What type and size of screen will the interview be viewed on?Approximately how long will the interview last?Knowing these answers can help you prepare your environment and any other home-based activities that could potentially interfere. After al l, conducting a video job interview from the local coffee shop is probably not a situation with a promising ending. Here are four different things to consider when preparing for your video Skype interview.EnvironmentPreparing your environment is very important. Not only should additional noise be eliminated, but the walls and overall room should be free of visual distractions. Additionally, the lighting should be flattering. Not direct and blinding to those on the other end, but also not so dark that you will not be seen.WardrobeJust as you would dress to impress for an in-person interview, so should you for a video interview. Perhaps those interviewing you will ask you to stand or maybe you will have to adjust something during the interview. In many cases, it is ideal that you have your hands and lap visible.Software/HardwareEliminating, to the best of your ability, any technical difficulties is important. More than likely, a video interview is going to establish your ability to mai ntain connection and not have to ask how to operate a program. Get familiar with the video software beforehand and have your computer, camera, and microphone optimized for the interview.PracticeHaving an extra set of hands is highly valuable when preparing for a Skype interview. Practice video conferencing with a friend so you feel comfortable with the software and get comfortable with looking at the camera, rather than the screen. Also, practicing prior to the interview can help in perfecting your posture, lighting, tone, and background.Participating in a Skype interview is very much like a typical interview, just a little more technical. With the right information, you can make the preparations to ace your next video interview.
